Athletes at Outdoor Retailer

At OR you always see super fit athletes checking out the new gear along with regular retailer and media folks. My sightings included climber Beth Rodden, extreme skier and guide Dean Cummings, Man vs. Wild’s Bear Grylls, and world-record holder Jordan Romero.

Bear speaks with media about his new line of outdoor apparel.

Grylls was there to talk about the new apparel line he is launching with Craghoppers – the largest outdoor retailer in the UK. Wanting to have a clothing line of his own for some time, Grylls and his crew have been out testing the fabrics, styles, and technologies in order to develop a product, as Grylls says, that is tested and proved. Their process: after his particularly grueling experiences (aren’t they all), he and his team sit down over beers (of course), and hash out what worked and what didn’t. Grylls says he’s proud of the line and likes the crossover between highly functioning, technical gear and a lifestyle brand that can be worn to your favorite post-adventure pub.

Jordan Romero with Paul Romero and Karen Lundgren, race directors for Snowshoe the Bear.

If you don’t know who Jordan Romero is, you might want to take a moment to educate yourself. At 15, he is the youngest person to have climbed all of the world’s tallest peaks. He finished this feat Christmas day with his climb of Vinson Massif in Antarctica. Along the way he also knocked off a few other world records including as member of the first family to climb the peaks together – he took dad Paul Romero and step-mom Karen Lundgren along. What’s also cool to know: Jordan, Paul and Karen are avid snowshoers. Paul and Karen are race directors for Southern California’s annual Snowshoe the Bear (5k and 10k race) that takes place in Big Bear Lake February 25, 2012.
