No. 9 Snowshoe-friendly Ski Resort: Grouse Mountain, British Columbia

On a clear day, the view from Grouse Mountain will leave you breathless. It is undeniably the most accessible outdoor playground Vancouver has to offer and lives up to its alternate name, the PEAK of Vancouver. Due to its proximity to downtown and the North Shore, Grouse Mountain appeals to locals and tourists alike.

The eight-minute Skyride tram is an experience in itself. Put 100 outdoorsy types either pre- or post-adventure crammed inside of a swift-moving mode of mountain transportation—the anticipation and energy are very exciting. The Skyride climbs high above the treetops and unloads passengers into an epic winter wonderland—and then, the Munday Alpine Snowpark awaits.

You’ll spend most of your time in your snowshoes discovering new tracks—or continuously trekking the tried and true trails for new wonders. No matter your fancy, The Blue Grouse Loop or Dam Mountain will be sure to keep you coming back for more. Here’s the real reason snowshoers keep coming back: the extra-curricular activities before and after the trail are endless… and challenging.

The Grouse Grind. Locals live for it, but when winter hits, it takes a new form. The Snowshoe Grind has a hardcore reputation and is a relentless personal challenge. Starting mountaintop, it’s 5.1k up, only open in daylight and included with your pass or lift ticket.

Be sure to hit some of the training clinics before you embark if it’s your first time, or you could be asking for a serious wake-up call. No problem if you don’t have your own pair of snowshoes, rentals are available at the Fireside Hut.
