Once we got down into the canyon, we found that only very little snow was on trail, and only in isolated spots. On compressed, frozen clay these traction cleats were usable, but felt excessive - heavy, and one should walk carefully to maintain lateral balance on the foot, as cleats of course cannot penetrate frozen clay. After a short walk, we decided that we will be better off taking them off.
Putting them on is not too hard, but one has to figure out how to do it correctly. Do not skip pictures in the manual. A large zip lock bag in the backpack will come handy if you find you do not want to wear them anymore. These cleats may be an overkill in the city after a light snow, but could be a fantastic asset in snow, icy snow, or after a freezing rain. They make impression of a solidly built product, with thick durable rubber and solid steel parts. I was impressed.
They are not suitable for travel over terrain a fall would be a big problem. If you need crampons, wear crampons!
I wear the XL-sized version with size 12.5 Oboz winter boots with a hefty heel and toe cap. Choose your size carefully to match your boots and you will find them to be stable and easy on/off. Given that they are made of plastic that must be stretched, don't expect them to last for ten years. Still they are a good value.
