I snowshoed by myself once..I had gone around this lake with a friend the day before so I thought..what the heck..I know the way..Ha there were more trails than I realized..It wasn't like a back country per se..I ran into some women and asked if this was a short cut to the sno-park. Of course they said! I didn't know them and they didn't know anything..I realized several hours of hiking I was on the wrong trail. Then I ran into a closed campground ( because it was winter) but I saw the cross country ski signs on trees so I kept going..unforturnately I finally found myself at a sno-park many miles from my car. It was getting dark . Fortunately for me two women had just pulled into the sno-park to turn around ...I ran up to them and they gave me a ride. I'll never do that again...From then on I always went into lake the way I came out. duh

In reply to <a href="https://www.snowshoemag.com/before-you-snowshoe-alone-ask-yourself-these-questions/#comment-344513">Hans L Erdman</a>.

Thank you for sharing, Hans! I agree that solo snowshoeing can be safe and fun if you're prepared. Your story about snowshoeing at Simpson Creek (and the importance of carrying the ten essentials) is an excellent example of staying prepared. You never know when things could happen. Here's to a fun and safe snowshoeing season! - Susan, Snowshoe Mag Editor

I wrote an article for Snowshoeing about 7 years ago that says a lot of the same things Matthew says. Solo snowshoeing can be fun, enjoyable, and safe if you take the proper precautions and carry the proper equipment. Special emphasis on #7 on the list of "10 Essentials" in my article.; carry spare parts and tools to repair ALL of your gear (Include a small sewing kit, too!) Have fun and Discover Winter, the Undiscovered Season! https://www.snowshoemag.com/the-backcountry-of-simpson-creek/
