Gear Review: Louis Garneau Everest Backcountry Snowshoes Review

louis-garneau-snowshoes-black-everest-snow-shoeIt’s not surprising that the Louis Garneau Everest snowshoe won Outside Magazine’s Gear of the Year award for 2014. This snowshoe combines one of the most innovative yet simple bindings we’ve seen with incredible traction and flex, making it the ideal companion for backcountry expeditions or earning your turns with a hike up the mountain and a ski or board back down.

The steel-lacing BOA binding closure uses a ratcheting knob that you can tighten without removing your gloves for a snug, sleek fit. Carbon steel crampons running in multiple directions pair with a flexible plastic deck for sure traction even on icy terrain or off-camber footing. The shoe pivots freely to shed snow and offers a natural-feeling stride with each step, and the added heel raiser is much appreciated on long ascents.

“Customers really dig the super positive traction and easy-to-use bindings on the Everest snowshoe,” said ORS Snowshoes Direct’s David Ricklefs.

The Everest comes in men’s black or a women-specific model in white.

The Louis Garneau Everest is suited for expedition and out-of-bounds performance. Comparable models in this category are the Tubbs FLEX ALP snowshoes and the MSR Evo Ascent snowshoes. All three offer the lightweight flexibility of durable plastic decking, and though MSR has been the forerunner in this style of snowshoe for years, the Louis Garneau Everest has everyone beat when it comes to superior binding systems.

Louis Garneau has been designing impressive products in multiple outdoor sports for decades, and the high-tech quality they put into everything they make is certainly apparent in their snowshoe line.
