Ben Saunders’ Scott Expedition Begins

The Scott Expedition is starting from Scott’s hut and back again. Ben Saunders will start and finish at Scott’s Hut on the north shore of Cape Evans, Ross Island, Antarctica – S77º 3. Departing from Scott’s Hut they will traverse the Ross Ice Shelf, before climbing nearly 8,000ft (2,440m) on one of the world’s largest glaciers, the Beardmore Glacier on to the Antarctica Plateau; and onwards to the South Pole. From the Pole it’s back the way they came, finishing 900 miles (1,450km) later where they began, at Scott’s Hut.

What sets this trip apart is at 1,800 miles it will be the longest unsupported polar journey in history. (The closest anyone has man-hauled in the Polar Regions to date is just under 1,600 miles achieved by Captain Scott (Who died, whilst trying to complete the return journey more than a century ago.). The expedition is unsupported and on foot – Ben and Tarka will have no dogs, no kites, no support vehicles. Carrying up to 200kg each (equivalent to two adult men) of kit and supplies necessary to survive. This will last for 110 days (almost four months).
