The Green Mountain Club’s 17th Annual Snowshoe Festival in Waterbury Center, Vermont

Elegant crunch.  Okay.  It is green conscious.  It is green cookies.  It is the Green Mountain Club’s keystone winter event, the 17th Annual Snowshoe Festival held this upcoming winter on February 2, 2013 at the Green Mountain Club Headquarters in Waterbury Center, VT.

A $10 donation gets you an awesome ticket to a day of guided tours, snowshoe demonstrations, naturalist demonstrations, guided and unguided snowshoe tours, free snowshoe rentals and other great outdoor, snowshoe related activities.  This year, the snowshoe rentals will be sponsored by CC OutdoorStore.  All proceeds directly go to the educational programs of the Green Mountain Club.

DSC00004In seasons past, this event has drawn crowds that have soared beyond 200.  The nature center and abounding countryside makes this a great place to take the friends, camping buddies, family, scout troop, rescue squad or special someone to explore to possibilities that putting on a pair of snowshoes can bring.  Past sponsors include Onion River, Trapp Family Lodge and Long Trail Brewing Company.

There will be activities for kids, including a bird-on-hand raptor show, scavenger hunts, wildlife tracking, dog sledding and how to properly plan a trek.

DSC00006There will be activities for adults like guided and unguided hikes. Informative and educational programming topics including winter campsite preparation and outdoor cooking seminars.  An after party with two very big bonfires will follow the day’s activities with live Irish music, beer and wine, food and drink, s’mores and more. This event is set up to entice you to learn SOMETHING, regardless of your level of snowshoe experience.

The Green Mountain Club is a small organization that is dedicated to the maintenance and preservation of Vermont’s hiking trails.  Unlike other states in the region, Vermont provides free hiking trailhead access throughout the state.

DSC00007In neighboring states across the U.S., many trailheads collect revenue in the form of parking fees.  The Long Trail, which is Vermont’s figurehead trail, actually preceded the Appalachian Trail and set the course for the regional chapters with free parking that are now used to mark distances along intrastate trails.

The Green Mountain Club depends on donations and volunteers to continue their mission—where the Catamount is spoken to roam.  Attend their event and send them your money.
