Thermal Bar: Edible Warmth for the Body’s Core

Think of the Thermal Bar like a base layer for your body’s core – worn on the inside, so to speak.  This one-of-a-kind, healthy energy bar does more than provide a much-needed boost before, during and after a nice snowshoe outing; it has a blend of tasty natural grains, healthy nutrients, antioxidants, omega fatty acids, and a proprietary blend of warming spices to help heat your body. While it’s great for any year-round activity, the Thermal Bar is the ideal snack for any cold-weather sport.

I first encountered the Thermal Bar at the USSSA National Snowshoe Championship races in Frisco, Colo. Among the energy boosters and snacks for the racers were a few boxes of Thermal Bars. The wrapper immediately caught my attention with the Thermal Bar logo as the centerpiece, the tagline “The Heat You Eat,” and a deep red color representing the Apple Cinnamon flavor.

Once unwrapped, I immediately knew the Thermal Bar was special… unlike most of the energy bars that line the grocery store shelves. It’s a fascinating product. Not only does it look different – with a yogurt-like glaze drizzled over the top and bottom – the taste is remarkably satisfying. Being a fan of cinnamon-flavored snacks, the Thermal Bar was a welcome treat.

The glaze offsets the heat of the cinnamon and other spices. It’s not too crunchy, not too sweet, not too chewy and not over-engineered. The bar’s consistency is soft and malleable with a slight crunch – more dense than a brownie but with soy-based components that make it filling.

Utilizing several high-quality spices – also known as the Thermal Blend – it also contains an easily digestible mix of grains, soy protein, nuts and oats; the Thermal Bar recipe is 230 calories of high-density nutrition for the body to convert to heat.

Ingredients include apple, almond butter, dates, yogurt coating (evaporated cane juice, palm kernel oil, non fat dry milk solids, yogurt powder cultured whey protein concentrate, cultured skim milk and yogurt culture, natural flavor, salt and soy lecithin), organic brown rice syrup, almonds, rolled oats, ground cinnamon, soy protein nuggets (soy protein isolate, rice flour and salt), organic flax seeds, glycerin, spice, high oleic sunflower oil and natural flavors.

Aside from enjoying the taste of the Thermal Bar, I did feel a warming sensation 15 to 20 minutes after consuming one. The Thermal Bar proved to be not only functional but valuable.

As a source of energy, it’s a great supplement for the snowshoe trail… with the added benefits of heat – a subtlety that’s best experienced in extreme cold conditions. But the Thermal Bar is also practical for active pursuits in mildly cold weather; it isn’t just for explorers of the polar ice caps. Try a bar before golfing on an early spring morning or camping after the sun goes down.

Behind the science of the Thermal Bar, you’ll find brothers Bob and Don Rose, both residents of Cazenovia, N.Y. The two entrepreneurs’ backgrounds define the spirit of their creation. They’ve effectively disrupted the current energy food market and have formed a niche brand with broad appeal that has set a standard.

Decisively, the Rose brothers have set the bar high; they’ve crafted a product that provides healthy energy (as fuel for the trail) but also mildly increases the body’s temperature for two to three hours – all with natural ingredients.

Recently, I enjoyed a Thermal Bar with a cup of coffee to get my day started. Suffering from a “change-of-weather” cold and sinus infection, the Thermal Bar was as soothing as chicken soup. Instead of spending the day in bed, I felt energized enough to get a few things done… and with plenty of energy to spare. In fact, I think it’s time for another dose of Thermal Bar.
