Gear Review: Chaco Credence Baa Nurl Boots

Strange name, extreme comfort. That is the idea behind Chaco’s Credence Baa Nurl boots, a winter, around town boot that fits like a high performance athletic shoe and is based on the feel of Chaco’s super supportive and super popular summer sandals.

For Chaco fans, this is the winter version of the sandals you wear all summer. For the uninitiated, these are some really supportive, really warm casual boots.

A 9-inch full grain leather boot with a full shearling lining and pigskin sockliner, the Credence Baa is clearly built for deep winter warmth, but Chaco’s ChaPU polyurethane midsole and the company’s contoured LUVSEAT platform mean that they also offer lasting arch support and alignment as well. That’s rare in a non-athletic winter boot and, according to Chaco, both help to improve gait and posture. The boot’s heel risers mean more lateral stability on iffy winter sidewalks, while the sculpted heel cups help absorb the force of foot strike impacts.

Of course, that’s not to say that the Credence Baa is only about fit. It’s also a tough little boot that can handle just about anything you might want to throw at them. In addition to the fully sealed, water resistant seams (these boots aren’t 100 percent waterproof), there’s also a Vibram Icetrek Nurl outsole for nonmarking traction on ice and snow. Sure, they are casually styled, slip-on boots that may not be ideally suited for a week long trek through the backcountry, but there is a good chance that they would be up to the task if it came down to it. And the mid-calf height is enough to keep out all but the deepest of snow drifts.

Beyond the contoured footbeds and shaped midsoles, Chaco claims that the Credence Baa’s leather uppers will also contour to the shape of the user’s foot which, combined with the shearling lining, means true slipper-like comfort that you can wear out into the ice and snow. It is a house slipper on steroids. It is a step-in winter boot that is up for everything for trips to the grocery store, to walks with the dog to even some light hiking.

It is also worth noting that the Chaco Credence Baa Nurl boots carry the Seal of Acceptance of the American Podiatric Medical Association, a trade group representing thousands of foot health specialists across the country. That is an indicator of just how much importance Chaco places on arch support and foot alignment.

Offered in men’s sizes only, the Credence Baa is available in both light and dark brown leather, both with white shearling lining.
