The 2011/2012 ski season will mark the grand opening of the newly reinvented Canyons Resort as it introduces more on-mountain enhancements in 2011 than any other U.S. ski resort. Canyons will open this Friday, November 25, at 9 a.m.

Canyons unveils a new winter ZipTour circuit, trail improvements, memorable dining options, snowshoeing, increased snowmaking, kid’s activities, new village programming and Canyons Club membership opportunities. The new amenities and programming complement the resort’s dynamic array of offerings including the most technologically advanced chair lift in North America with heated seats and a European-style après ski area named Ski Beach.

“It’s exciting to open for the ski season with the full complement of innovative new features that have been put in place over the past year,” said Mike Goar, Managing Director of Canyons Resort. “Through our hard work during the off-season, we’ve continued to transform Canyons into the new, compelling choice for a mountain vacation in North America. We’re thrilled to offer an exciting array of amenities and improvements to our guests.”

The new amenities for the 2011/2012 season are an extension of the reinvention project that has been rolling out over the past year, which includes: the new Orange Bubble Express chair lift, Ski Beach gathering area, a collection of exciting dining venues and specialty food carts, a direct gondola and expanded terrain.

Also this month, Canyons proposed an 8-passenger gondola known as SkiLink that, subject to approvals, will connect Canyons and Solitude resorts in just 11 minutes and create the most unique ski network in North America. The transportation-only connection is the subject of the Wasatch Range Recreation Access Enhancement Act, proposed by four members of Utah’s Congressional delegation: Rep. Rob Bishop, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, Sen. Orrin Hatch and Sen. Mike Lee. For more information, visit www.skilink.com.

Snowshoeing

This winter Canyons launches its expanded snowshoeing program where local guides introduce guests to the beauty of the Wasatch Mountains. Guests can hike a network of snow-covered trails within the resort and enjoy a gourmet lunch in the warmth of Lookout Cabin.

Winter ZipTour Adventure

This high-speed adventure is a one-of-a-kind family experience featuring two thrilling zip lines. The advanced zip line is suspended 140-feet above the ground, stretches more than 2,100 feet with a 10 percent grade and flies across the canyon between Lookout Peak and Red Pine Lodge. An intermediate zip line stretches 800 feet with an 8 percent grade and offers a tree-top ride through the Red Pine area.

Trail Improvements and Glade Skiing

On the southern-most part of Canyons, Iron Mountain includes a new detachable quad lift and provides guests with access to an additional 300 acres of northwestern-facing skiing and snowboarding terrain. The area includes 10 runs that range from intermediate to expert to gladed tree skiing. For ski and snowboard experts looking for more adventure, the north-facing runs in the Iron Mountain and Condor Woods areas offers additional terrain for diverse tree skiing. The Timberline chair lift also now allows guests to ride in either direction and provides easy access to the south side of Canyons.

Dining

With the experienced team from the Talisker Restaurant Collection behind all of Canyons’ restaurants, guests this winter can enjoy unique dining additions and menu enhancements. The Umbrella Bar, a lively gastro pub in the Resort Village, will expand with a new seating area that guests can enjoy along with the eatery’s signature gourmet burgers and beers. “Beachfront” Red Tail Grill offers a new family-friendly menu of Southwestern cuisine. In addition to lunch, après ski and dinner, Red Tail Grill serves breakfast daily.

Kids Winter Activity Zone

Canyons is the perfect destination for families this winter season as the resort introduces a new Kids Winter Activity Zone complete with snow-castle building, ice forts, ice bowling, meet-and-greets with Canyons’ search and rescue dogs and tasty s’mores under the stars.

Village Programming and Traditions

This winter season, guests will enjoy celebrations and new traditions in Canyons’ Resort Village. Guests can watch a movie under the stars while perched on one of the outdoor terraces, enjoy sleigh rides and dog sledding, and watch concerts on the village event stage. The holiday season will be complete with Christmas carolers and snowman-making competitions for the entire family to enjoy. Canyons will host a series of signature events and daily traditions in its Resort Village.

Canyons Club

Canyons Club is a members-only ski club available on a weekly or seasonal basis. Members receive valet parking, personal ski lockers, private on-mountain dining and other exclusive ski privileges. Canyons Club will continue to offer ski valet service at the village terminal for the Red Pine Gondola.

Expanded Snowmaking

As a complement to Canyons’ almost 400 natural inches of the “Greatest Snow on Earth” and existing snowmaking capabilities, more than $1 million was invested in new snowmaking infrastructure including additional pumping capacity for new snow guns. These improvements allow for increased early coverage of Lookout Ridge and runs served by the Orange Bubble Express chair lift. A 20-million gallon reservoir and additional infrastructure investments more than double the already significant snowmaking capabilities at Canyons.
