It was a clean sweep for Allison Crocker (Amherst, MASS) as she won all three events at the USA Orienteering Championships, held October 21 – 23 in Boston and surrounding areas.
Crocker led the women’s field in the Sprint (Franklin Park), Middle (Lynn Woods – Lynn) and long distance events (Middlesex Fells – Stoneham) winning gold medals in each event. Hannah Burgess (Pittsburgh, PA) was Crocker’s closest rival, finishing third in the Sprint and second in both the Middle and the Long events.
In the men’s championships, the honors were evenly divided. William Hawkins (Rochester, NY) won the gold medal in the Sprint, Sergei Zhyk (Wayne, NJ) won the gold medal in the Middle and Eric Bone (Seattle, WA) won the gold medal in the Long.
Over 300 orienteers from across the country competed in the national championships, which were organized by the Cambridge Sports Union and sanctioned by Orienteering USA. Plans are currently underway for the 2012 national championships, which will be held in April 2012 in Carrolton, GA.
