The SCARPA Kailash GTX Boots Reflect a Rich History of Craftsmanship and Durability

SCARPA is a rare company.  It has a history that most boot manufacturers don’t have: It originated in northern Italy, it’s family-owned, and focuses purely on crafting the best boots for mountaineering.  I’d have to agree.  I have a personal history that reflects SCARPA’s quality and reputation.  My father bought me a pair of SCARPAs – as my first pair of hiking boots – back in the late 80s.  They were a simple leather boot with a sturdy sole and offered padded ankle support.  I remember waterproofing the boots with beeswax and worked hard to break-in the boots before a long hike.  SCARPA has come a long way in the construction of its boots.

Today, I’m using the Kailash GTX for snowshoeing.  They don’t require extra waterproofing because they feature a breathable GORE-TEX lining.  In addition, they are considerably more lightweight compared to my boots of yesteryear.  The world of outdoor technology has come a long way over the years … and SCARPA is no exception.

SCARPA stands for Società Calzaturiera Asolana Riunita Pedemontana Anonima, which means Associated Shoe Manufacturing Company of the Asolo Mountain Area.  This acronym offers some insight into the company’s past, present and future.  While some companies abandon their roots for a new branding initiative, SCARPA revels in its history.

The company’s products still offer the cornerstone elements that enhanced its popularity among outdoorspeople: innovation, resilience, comfort and performance.  This respect and passion for its products are the reason why people choose SCARPA for the most rigorous global adventures – from the high peaks of the Himalayas to the humble rolling hills of the Adirondacks.

The Kailash GTX boots mirror SCARPA’s more than 50-year history in bootmaking.  The boots are a sturdy, tough, waterproof solution for snowshoers on the search for reliable footwear.  Over the few months I’ve tested the Kailash, they have been a dependable addition to my snowshoe gear.  From the conditions of very simple snowshoe hikes to sub-zero temperatures that have tested my endurance, the Kailash have performed overwhelmingly positive.  And they haven’t shown a lot of “wear and tear,” considering they’ve been stuffed in snowshoe bindings the entire time.  The leather hasn’t cracked, stiffened or become weathered by any means.

Similar to my first pair of SCARPAs, the Kailash offer simple but yet powerful benefits to hikers (and snowshoers).  Yet waterproof and constructed with gaiters in mind, the boots are protected with a Vibram Hi-Trail Lite sole.  And Vibram is a no-brainer in my opinion – especially for a winter boot.  A Vibram sole and the Kailash’s toe cap fit perfectly with most snowshoe bindings.  In other words, it’s made to last.

Snowshoers are sure to be pleased with SCARPA’s Kailash GTX boots.  They provide only what’s essential for winter weather conditions – in deep snow and on ice – and continue to carry out the mission that they were assigned: protect and serve.
