Win Big Money on Small Snowshoes: Beaver Creek’s SS Series

A major move up the food chain of snowshoe series comes roaring out of the Rockies like a blizzard. The Beaver Creek Snowshoe Series now offers big bread for prize money: $15,000. That is a lot of dough!

Now everyone has a reason to move to Beaver Creek, Colorado: snowshoe race in their thrilling high altitude over some of the most beautiful terrain imaginable. Plus it is a green race — to the tune of 15,000 greenbacks split among two series. The East West 5 Km and the Dogma Athletica 10 km offer separate challenges for those who can toe the start line and stand among top names in snowshoeing like four-time USSSA Champion, Josiah Middaugh.

The first weekend in the winter months of January, February, and March opens with a Dogma Athletica Snowshoe Series Cup event. Prize money will be liberally spread among both series. Plus, women and men’s divisions will be awarded all the way back to fifth place.

Rod Connolly, Dogma Athletica’s owner, stepped up big time to make the purse possible, demonstrating true vision with a stroke of a pen. “This series is truly locally driven but we wanted to add some excitement that will bring people into town to race for the series titles as well as encourage our great local endurance athletes to participate. I would love to see our strong cycling community and Nordic skiers racing with the snowshoers. This is a great way to get more people into the sport. It’s a relatively inexpensive sport to get into, and once you have the snowshoes our valley can’t be beat for snowshoeing.

Even better, Josiah Middaugh has created a training regimen especially directed toward those who want to improve their results in snowshoe racing. “People should know the training program is not just for elite snowshoe racers. We have options for people of all levels, and we really encourage people new to the sport to come out. It’s the best way to learn how to properly train, get the correct advice, and have fun in the sport.”

In addition to his elite status and four USSSA National Championships, including a thrilling win at the Syracuse Nationals in 2010, Middaugh is truly a nice guy. Gracious and humble in his win, he gave credit to Iowa’s Scott Gall in their daring dual particularly the quad-burning race up the final humbling hill. And now, you can learn his secrets.

Beaver Creek, an American Alpine Resort, offers top end accommodations gourmet dinners, and a dedication to snow that makes old man winter blush with envy. Their tag line says it best: “Beaver Creek — Not Exactly Roughing It.”

Connolly invites new and seasoned snowshoers to join them in the series. “I am excited to be a part of this partnership. The Vail Valley is really trying to position itself as a leader in fitness and health. This series has fantastic courses and Beaver Creek is a wonderful destination. It’s a great opportunity for us to promote the quality of venues we have in the valley, our healthy athletic community, and the high caliber of coaching available. This series will be the most exciting series in snowshoe racing in the country.”
