Registration Open for 2011 U.S. National Toboggan Championships

Grab your toboggan and head for the coast of Maine, where the mountains meet the sea. Registration is now open for the 2011 U.S. National Toboggan Championships, which has drawn participants from all over the country for the past 20 years. In February 2011, 425 teams of costumed “athletes” will fly down the wooden chute onto the frozen Hosmer Pond competing for the coveted top honor.

Costs: 2 person division = $60, 3-person = $90, 4-person = $120; experimental = $100

Deadlines: Registrations must be received by Friday, January 28, 2011.

“Imagine over 1000 adrenaline junkies screaming down a frozen ice chute at 40 miles an hour. It’s a tradition, it is great fun and it’s an incredible rush,” said Dan Bookham, executive director of the Camden-Rockland-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce.

“The Midcoast really comes alive in the winter. For the Toboggan weekend, we are planning on fireworks in the harbor, great entertainment, activities for all ages and affordable lodging packages.”
