Gear Review: Thule TCDB-1 70 Liter Duffel Bag

If you are familiar with the Thule brand, it’s most likely from the many vehicles that don bike, ski and snowboard racks (and carriers) made by the Swedish company.  If you’ll notice, these racks are often overloaded with stickers to illustrate the owner’s brand loyalty (or their political approach to life).  Surprisingly, Thule is more than just sports equipment racks for the adventurer on the road.  They also have an extensive lineup of luggage and travel bags – ideal for snowshoers.

For the snowshoer on the go, Thule has an intelligently-designed 70-Liter duffel bag.  Fit for any travel situation, the TCDB-1 can hold a pair of Tubbs FLEX Alps (as pictured) and a load of other snowshoeing gear.

Although snowshoers will find the Thule TCDB-1 a great bag for storing and transporting gear, it’s also ideal for photographers.  I was able to fit a folded tripod, multiple cameras, and all the necessary accessories with plenty of room leftover for clothing and toiletries.  Its combination of durable and lightweight materials offers the essential protection for sensitive, fragile gear.  Its materials are also water-resistent – a benefit to snowshoers as well.

Conveniently, I stored my Sanyo HD camcorder in the bag’s crush-proof SafeZone compartment (as pictured, opened).  This zippered area is accessible from the outside of the bag, on the side, which is perfect for quick and easy access.  The compartment protects portable electronics, eyewear and other delicate gear.  It also has a locking zipper and can be removed for extra room in the bag’s main compartment.

The Thule bag is also the perfect carry-on bag for air travelers, especially with its multiple pockets and fold-out main compartment.  Each time I checked in for my flight and received my TSA rubdown, nobody ever questioned its size; it fit into the scanner and overhead compartments without problems.  In addition, a great carry-on bag feature is the handles on each end of the bag. This allows for it to be easily pulled from hard-to-reach areas with ease.

Approved by a snowshoer for snowshoers, the Thule TCDB-1 Duffel Bag is appropriate for all winter outings – big or small.
