A Cross Fox Shows But Mr. Whitecheeks Off On Vacation?

Friends Jeanette and Jerry way out in Alaska in the Lake Clark Reserve keep track of our fox friends playing in the snow. Here’s what they saw:

“Late in the winter we stopped seeing Mr. Whitecheeks (see top photo) featured in Snowshoe Magazine, 2008. It was mating season so perhaps he had better things to do.  He was a red fox.  Mr. Whitecheeks was named after an Alaskan character up here called Mr. Whitekeys.  Used to have a bar that did goofy spoofs on Alaskans, especially politicians.  Now Mr. Whitekeys is on the Friday news up here, just a short spoof and not as funny as used to be.

Here are the snowshoes in the photo:

First pair from left: wooden ones – no name on them only “Made in Canada”, given to us by friend

Second pair from left: Tubbs, Mountain 35

Third pair from left: Atlas – “Trans-Alaska” from Cabelas

Fourth pair from left: Tubbs, Mountain 25

Last pair: Sherpa, “Snow Claws”

The most used out of all those pairs are the Tubbs.  A good company to deal with as I wore out a pair and they replaced them free of charge.

No new snowshoeing adventures as we have no snow here in our piece of Alaska, mid-January, 2010.

Here is a photo of a cross fox, which is a phase of red fox.  As cross foxes go, this is not such a pretty one. Some are marked really neat, the cross coming from the pattern that is usually on their shoulder / back area.  This one didn’t get the vole/shrew it was after, unfortunately. We have seen them do this high jump a few times and usually they are successful.
