Merrell Oyster Racing Series Goes Off Road for First Time

In response to the overwhelming participation in its signature events and the growing popularity of adventure racing, the Merrell Oyster Racing Series will take the fun off road in a debut off road challenge in 2010.

The Merrell Oyster Off Road Race will take place Saturday, May 22 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado on the western slope of the Rockies. From the hot springs to the beautiful mountain trails, Glenwood Springs is an ideal place for a weekend getaway and the Oyster Off Road event. Designed as a unique alternative for adventure aficionados who compete in 5K and 10K races and triathlons, the Merrell Oyster Off Road race will feature the mandatory disciplines of mountain biking and trail running.

Mystery disciplines could include orienteering and a water element as well as a number of surprise challenges such as answering trivia, completing brain teasers and performing stunts. The race will take four to five hours and cover 20 to 30 miles. The exact course is kept a tightly guarded secret and is revealed as teams move from check point to check point.

“We have heard from our Oyster racers and others that an off road Oyster would be a great addition to our lineup of events, and Glenwood Springs has everything we need for a great time and a challenging race” said Jason Ornstein, vice president of adventure for the Merrell Oyster Racing Series. “The combination of the off road race and the signature Oyster elements will be a really unique experience, and we are psyched to kick off an Off Road program.”

The Glenwood Springs Merrell Oyster Off Road will benefit the Glenwood Rotary Club with proceeds directed to youth educational scholarships.
