The Call of the Wild

With less than a week before Christmas, my intention this morning was to roll pie crusts to put in the freezer, but with the sun shining brightly on the first newly fallen snow how could I stay inside. So donning my outdoor clothes and snowshoes I decided to head for the woods to check for animal footprints in the snow.

Before getting away from the house I found a coyote had been circling around the back yard so I followed it’s trail towards the woods. Everything was so beautiful with the evergreens decorated with their winter white, who needs artificial decorations?

Deeper into the woods I found where five deer, who had evaded the hunters and coyotes, had melted their images in the snow where they had bedded down for the night.

All the time I was hiking through the woods a verse kept running through my head that I had learned as memory work many years ago in school:

“The woods are lovely dark and deep, but I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.”

As I headed for home I came upon a set of huge tracks – Bigfoot?  No, I had gone a complete circle in the woods and these were my own snowshoe tracks in the snow

Since there promises to be more snow calling me out in the next few days, I’d better get back to the rolling pin if my family is to get  pie for Christmas.
