Gear Review: Outdoor Research Trio Jacket

I love 3-in-1 jackets! They’re perfect for snowshoeing. And, nothing works better and is more versatile for travel. Outdoor Research’s Trio jacket is a 3-in-1 that I love having hanging in my closet; it’s been a go-to choice for many of my snowshoeing excusions.

The one feature that I love about this jacket (more like two features) is the zip-off hood and powder skirt. This isn’t just a jacket…it’s a transformer! Nonetheless, the word “versatile” doesn’t exactly describe the full highlights of the OR Trio. Its warmth during some of the coldest mornings, among some of the highest peaks, has been beneficial to my snowshoe outings.

During my springtime in the Rockies snowshoe hikes, I experienced both cold, snowy weather and some heavy rain. The Trio worked great in both extreme conditions. However, I had some trouble with the liner’s draw string that connects it to the shell.

The draw string loop snapped when changing my snowshoes – accidently caught it in my binding. Oh well. I still like this jacket, despite one feature’s malfunction (after more than the usual abuse, most likely). Additionally, I used the liner during a day hike in 50+ degree weather. It was another sure winner, but it didn’t breath as well as I would have hoped. I sweated big time, which is quite normal for a good snowshoe hike. But, it was another enjoyable day with the Trio Transformer.
