Preaching to the Choir

I find myself very giddy with all the snow we have gotten so far this year. Our first snowfall was almost a month ago and I have done pretty much every run since then on snowshoes! I have already run on snowshoes more times within the past few weeks, than I did for the entire months of November, December and probably even January last year. Mind you, there have been a number of days where I have run more than once, but still.

With the great snow conditions in many areas this year, there does seem to be a renewed interest in snowshoe running. I know I don’t need to be telling most of the people reading this how much fun snowshoeing is, but there still seems to be a whole whack of people out there who look at you like you have two heads when you tell them that you ‘run’ on snowshoes. Most people follow up with, “You mean those big wooden things that look like tennis racquets?”. While I am used to having to clarify my sport of choice, as I’ve been doing this for years with ultra running, mountain running, dogsledding and even just running itself, I still do find it perplexing that more people haven’t discovered the joys of snowshoeing. Anyone can do it and once they’ve tried it once, they’ll realize what a great workout it is and the incredible amount of fun you can have.

Just last week, I was telling a friend of mine Rick, that he should give snowshoe running a try. He has fantastic trails on his property and has been kind enough to let us run on them for years. Rick is a very active guy who work outs out up to 10 times per week by running, cycling and swimming, so was a natural to give snowshoe running a try. So, we let Rick borrow a good pair of running snowshoes to try and he was hooked on it within minutes. In fact, Rick was so enthused with this new found outdoor activity that he ordered his own pair of Dion Snowshoes within minutes of getting back.

So, I challenge everyone out there in snowshoeland to take at least one friend out with you snowshoe running (or snowshoeing) this month and help educate the world about what a great activity it is!
