It seems like it’s been so long since we had our last ‘real’ snowshoe run. Looking in my training log, it dates back to late March. Since then we have made do with some great trail runs, but there’s just nothing quite like heading out onto the trail, with the cold biting at your nose and the snow flying up your back.
We got to the point in August when we were missing it so much, something just had to give. I remember the day vividly, as it was probably the hottest day of the summer (yes, we have hot summers in Canada!). We packed up our snowshoes in the car and headed out to find our summer snowshoe training site. The thought of snowshoe running in August made us giddy with excitement. Arriving at the nearest sand dunes, we quickly strapped on our snowshoes ready to play. Initially, we were a little concerned what people would think, seeing these two crazy trail runners. We didn’t let that get in the way though, of having a blast!
The fun we had powering up the sandy dunes, then leaping off the highest hill is definitely something that all snowshoe runners should experience at some point. It should probably be noted however, that we continued to find sand in many strange places for weeks to come.
Now it’s November, and the weather has been teasing us. We have had many days dropping to below freezing, and many days with lots of precipitation…just not at the same time yet.
Maybe this weekend will be when we finally see some of the white stuff!
