A little over two-thirds of the way up the Lake Michigan side of the mitten state’s Lower Peninsula, you’ll find the beautiful Grand Traverse area and the stunning Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Owned and operated by the U.S. National Park Service, Sleeping Bear Dunes is 71,000 acres of glacial moraine and natural areas that include: towering sand dunes, 35 miles of pristine Lake Michigan shoreline, scenic bluffs with dramatic views, isolated off shore islands, shipwrecks, crystal clear lakes and streams, and acres of woodland serenity.

When 14-year-old Reise Collins selected snowshoeing from the list of available Special Olympics winter activities, his parents were a little surprised. Reise had never been on snowshoes before, nor had anyone else in the Collins family. Now, several months later, Reise is gaining proficiency on snowshoes every time he heads out with the Campbell River BC Special Olympics Snowshoe Team, and is also having a blast. Reise recently raced in his first regional competition, and has even inspired his parents to try snowshoeing. Not bad for a newcomer to the sport.

My wife and I have been to Red River several times for both summer and winter vacations. It has long been a favorite spot for Texans to escape the dreadful summer heat that is inevitable. Affordability and close proximity have always been major draws-not just to Texans. From our home in Denton (40 miles north of Dallas) we can be in Red River in less than twelve hours. Due to its small size and location slightly off the beaten path, Red River is sometimes overlooked by Texans looking for a mountain getaway.
