September 03, 2010

A family that hikes together has more fun than families that stay at home.  This is proven.  The Mountain Hardwear Fluid 26 backpack is what coaxed me and the "fam" out into the backcountry of Colorado this summer.  I used the Fluid 26 as a lightweight daypack combined with a hydration bladder - worked beautifully.  Even with a full three-liter bladder placed in an easy-to-access pocket, there was still room for the essentials: sunscreen, first-aid kit, binoculars, energy bars, emergency gear, and a few other items.  Even better, I let my wife carry the pack: From her reports, it's a great fit for the ladies.  It's comfortable, lightweight and has straps that aren't overbearing.

Gear Review: Montrail Mountain Masochist Trail Running Shoes

September 02, 2010

With a name like "Mountain Masochist" you'd expect a certain amount of submission...no restraint on the trail.  And that's what you get.  The Masochist is the ultimate trail running shoe for the summer months: Its breathable hydrophobic mesh upper keeps your feet cool.  Its low-ankle design and snug-fitting support helped when pushing through sharp, rugged corners on the trails.  The Gryptonite outersole was durable enough to take the extreme conditions of rocky backcountry trail running.  Of course, I think Gryptonite is an awesome name - hence the reason I used it in the first paragraph and will throughout the remainder of this article.

Gear Review: Osprey Mutant 38 Backpack

August 11, 2010

When I think of Cortez, Colo., I now think of Osprey Packs.  Based in the small town, the company is near some of the state's purest backcountry destinations.  Osprey is a well-known brand and manufacturer of backpacks.  Stay alert and you'll notice fellow trailgoers sporting Osprey gear, uniquely stamped with the trademark red and gray logo.  I'm new to the Osprey brand - despite it being around since the 70s.  ("You'll have to excuse my friend. He's a little slow. The town is back that way.")  After a day with the Osprey Mutant 38, I was no longer "Dumb and Dumber" ... no longer a virgin to the Osprey brand.  The Mutant 38 "wined and dined" me proper.

Gear Review: Powermonkey eXplorer Portable Solar Charger

July 20, 2010

Bringing consumer electronics on the trail is always a tough decision.  There are so many to choose from: GPS devices, MP3 players, cell phones, avalanche beacons, VCRs, and others.  Survival and entertainment are the two contributing reasons to lugging all that hardware around the backcountry.  Powering that junk is an entirely different issue, especially when packing additional batteries.  Batteries suck.  They’re heavy and not exactly a “green” product – no matter how long they last.  Disposing of “dry” batteries is a nightmare.  Remember, leave no trace – what you pack in, pack it out.  Replace the dependence on the Energizer Bunny with a solar-powered charger.  In this case, use the Powermonkey eXplorer to rule your outdoor electronics.  Go solar on the trail!  Stellar!

Gear Review: Mountain Hardwear Micro Grid Fleece Jacket

July 19, 2010

I was able to fully appreciate the Mountain Hardwear Micro Grid Fleece Jacket during an outdoor Independence Day celebration in Denver: Thunder and hail storms moved into the area and the temperature dropped quickly.  I threw on the Micro Grid like a Batman uniform – sleek, stylish and ready to fight crime. This was an urban test of its capabilities, but it fundamentally proved that the Micro Grid is indeed a 365-day, year-round jacket.  An alpine trail running assessment would come next.  For snowshoeing, it would have to wait.

July 18, 2010

I’m new to Merrell.  So far, I’ve been impressed.  I was introduced to the brand during a trail running event called the Merrell Oyster Off Road Adventure Race in Glenwood Springs, Colo.  Being the title sponsor, Merrell allowed me to test three different items: the CTR Cruise trail running shoes, Tenon baselayer and Brookvale shell.  This trail running trio was an excellent combination of rugged support and off-road excellence.   Merrell’s recipe of style and performance translate into optimal three-season gear.  I’m not entirely sure they’ll be optimized for snowshoeing, but that won’t hold me back from trying (later, of course).

July 18, 2010

Polarized sunglasses make me think of the products marketed on popular infomercials throughout the years – Blue Blockers and HD Vision.  Would I suggest using those for trail running and snowshoeing?  Absolutely not!  When out in the elements, protecting the eyes is highly important – essential is more like it.  In my opinion, it’s best to spend some coin on a pair of shades that will offer true polarized protection.  Don’t fall for some crappy product with the moniker, “as seen on TV.”  I have adopted the Under Armour’s Impulse Polarized Blue Mirror sunglasses as part of my everyday gear on the go and what I take when I’m on the trails.  They sit close to the face and comfortably contour the curves of my oversized skull.

"Out of sight, out of mind."

Have you ever heard somebody utter that phrase?  It's a phrase that seems to be relative to a person's current thought-process: If I don't have to see it, then it's nothing I really care about.

But that's the kind of ignorance that many settle with; they care only about what it is they can reach.  And they only care about what affects their current situation.  Knowing this, would you care if somebody said our mountain forests are dying?  Would you believe it even if you didn’t see it?  I hope so.

“I’m a snowshoer and KT Tape was my idea!”

Jackets with fill down insulation offer a genuine shield from extremely cold weather and harsh winter conditions.  Lately, in Colorado, the conditions have been very extreme – with days recently hitting 19 below.  Of course, here in the Centennial State, life goes on when the weather is crazy.  During harsh walks to the bus and snowshoeing trips in the foothills, the Outdoor Research Virtuoso Jacket has been a lifesaver when the temperatures have reached dangerously cold levels.

Gear Review: Talus ColdAvenger High Performance Mask

January 03, 2009

When I snowshoe, it never fails: My chin and nose get colder than any other part of my body.  This happens particularly because it’s the only exposed skin on my body when outside in the outdoor elements.  It’s a problem that isn’t easily remedied without the right gear, but most products on the market are either cheaply made or don’t properly do the job.  This season, it’s all about finding the right gear for the conditions…and I have solved yet another problem for my snowshoeing adventures.  Talus Outdoor Technologies created the ColdAvenger: A cold weather mask that allows you to breathe freely while keeping your face warm and dry.  I like that.

Gear Review: Ibex Kilometer Gloves

December 15, 2008

I once owned a pair of gloves – don’t recall the brand name – that advertised to be the thinnest, warmest available.  They were made with wet suit material, which made them relatively thin and mildly warm.  What I didn’t like about them was their inability to work with Velcro.  The wet suit material would stick to the Velcro and then slowly fray at the fingertips.  That sucks!  Although they were good gloves, I unknowingly gave them to a homeless man after misplacing them on the downtown bus.  Whoops.  I now have a new pair of gloves that are thin and warm AND work with Velcro: the Ibex Kilometer Gloves.  Sweet!
