It will be months before the trails are covered with enough winter frosting to keep a New England snowshoe enthusiast happy. Yet, we want to stay in shape, and we want to keep enjoying the outdoors, even if it doesn’t include a three-foot layer of powder.

Question:

I am now an avid snowshoe runner first and a trail runner second. I hate to see the snow melt in the spring.

How can I train through the summer months to be a stronger/faster snowshoe runner in the winter? Can you please give me some workouts that might help for the next snowshoe season.

For winter sports athletes, nothing can ruin a season quite like a knee or other joint injury. At best, you’re looking at 6-12 months on the sidelines: going under the knife, working through months of rehabilitation and then trying to get back in shape before the snow melts.

It is a perfect romantic setting. The day spent in the great outdoors, the fireplace flickering, meals eaten by candlelight, a snowy panorama stretching in the moonlight and a sleigh outside the restaurant. It's romantic and perfect for Valentine's Day or any day.

Glitzy Life Time Fitness Pockets Leadville: Paradigm Shift Underway. For better or for worse, the future has arrived. Here comes liquidity for trail race owners as they put cash in the treasure chest for the very creations they developed -- and sweated over -- t-shirts for volunteers who made it all work, and names like the Walmart Western States 100 coming to dominate the new landscape.

When planning a multi-day winter trip to kick off my winter vacation, I envisioned sounds of fresh snow breaking away beneath my feet, crisp air biting my cheeks. Instead I found myself hiking a mile in from a Sno-Park in merely my boots, snowshoes strapped to my pack, the half-melted, thin layer of December snow barely resembling anything that would have required more extreme gear. When I finally reached more rugged terrain, I miserably strapped on my snowshoes, an afternoon rain dripping off the bill of my rain jacket and into my face. This was not a winter trip. I cursed silently.

Sitting here in Switzerland in the summer, the winter seems a long time ago. It's more than 30 degrees Celsius (that's 86 degrees Fahrenheit if you're in North America) and it's only 9 a.m. So, a great way to cool down is to look back at some trips around Switzerland and let the snowy landscapes cool the room.

Two facts for consideration:

1. Snowshoeing is a cold weather, winter sport.

2. Athletes who participate in winter sports put themselves at risk for a variety of sometimes severe cold weather injuries, including hypothermia, frostbite and more.

(This is hard-hitting information, I know.)

Question:

I just completed my first organized trail run and have a question about running downhill.  My body naturally adjusts when I'm running uphill, but once I start the downhill, I can't figure out how to run so I'm not putting too much pressure on my knees or my quads. What should I be focusing on when I'm running downhill to run quickly and efficiently?
